Eliminating Concrete Jungles and Creating Balance in a Modern World

October 28, 2016

As we leap into a modern world, we have witnessed the horrifying effects of an industrial revolution to our earth— with an explosion of concrete jungles and imbalanced public spaces. We have deprived our relationship with the environment and upset a delicate ecological balance. With that, there is a growing body of research showing a connection between human health and the design + structure of towns, cities and regions.

It is time to revitalize the virgin earth.

Landscape architecture is not just beautification. It is a discipline rooted in holistic thinking, focused on a balanced relationship between a city’s natural systems — the water, trees, air quality, open space; and human systems — the sidewalks, highways, and infrastructure. When we build, we must take both nature and society into account. We can use landscape architecture to apply these principles to the planning, design, management, and rehabilitation of the natural environment.

“When I see a concrete jungle, I feel an overpowering desire to find balance.” says Tyson Scott, President of VERDANT. “I ask myself, how do we take advantage of what “is”, to blend nature and create harmony?”

When a concrete jungle is transformed into a flourishing park, garden, etc., the entire city benefits— initiating an active lifestyle where people are encouraged to walk, cycle, participate and interact. Studies show that people tend to be healthier and happier in areas where they have access to green urban spaces. More green space means the regeneration of polluted areas, sustainable in many ways; including cleaning the city air, retaining rainwater, and increasing biodiversity.

Yet revitalizing the earth doesn’t stop there. The VERDANT approach is about going beyond… dissolving the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces to create harmony. VERDANT moves towards the future of design with urban roof gardens, open courtyards, and outdoor workspaces. Our sustainable designs leave an enduring impact for years to come.
